Thoughts On The First Episode of ‘Shadow and Bone’ By A Non-Fan

Shadow and Bone

Rated: TV-14

Summary: Sinister forces plot against a young soldier after she reveals a magical power that may unite her world.

I am not a fan of Leigh Barduo or the Grishaverse. I’ve tried it though! I listened to the entire Shadow and Bone Trilogy. I listened to it hoping it would just get stronger (& I was running low on books to listen to). It was fine. Not terrible or anything but nothing that wowed me. I know a lot of my online book friends prefer Six of Crows. Gave that a try. I actually ended up not finishing it.

I am a big believer that sometimes a great adaption can change your mind about a book. I also believe that sometimes a book can be the wrong book at the wrong time. Both of those reasons are why I’ve decided to give at least the pilot episode of Shadow and Bone a try.

I know some people were up in arms about the actress choice for Alina but I quite liked her. The subtle and not-subtle racism add a nice depth to Alina.

While I never read Six of Crows, I knew enough to know that it takes place after the first series. I was pleased to see that storyline getting equal screen time. I also know enough to know that this is a new addition. I like it though!

I like Mal so far! But in all fairness, I never understood all the Mal hate in the fandom.

The show is incredibly visually appealing. They’ve done a spectacular job so far.

All in all, I am looking forward to continuing with the series! I likely won’t binge watch but will post my thoughts after I finish the series.
